Throughout the day, we’ll be looking into the living world of soil and mycelium and sensing how to integrate spent mushroom substrate into home and small-scale farm composting systems. Learn about Woven Roots Farm’s no-till, hand-scale, growing, composting, mulching, and harvesting practices, and how mushroom substrate is being incorporated into their farming practices.

Mushroom substrate is an amazing way to increase the bioactivity of your compost, making your soil rich and nutrients more accessible to plants. We will be looking at compost at all stages: mixing it ourselves, observing a well-inoculated sample, and spreading compost on our beds. We’ll also take a close look at compost throughout the inoculation process via microscopes, guiding you to know what to look for on your own. For those that don’t have a microscope at home, this is a great chance to learn how to build one using simple materials and a smartphone. DIY kits will be for sale. Afterwards, you’ll be able to sense into making your own beautiful mushroom compost blend, look for the creatures who make compost happen, and apply this knowledge to your very own beds.

MATERIALS: DIY microscope kits will be available for purchase on-site from Woven Roots, with a how-to demo during the event.

ACCESSIBILTY:

This event will be offered in both English and Spanish.

Cushioned folding chairs available on site. Composting toilet with one step-up is currently available.

Greyhound has a bus depot in the neighboring town of Lee. A rideshare can be arranged from that site.

This site has uneven terrain and inclines in varying areas. Accessibility parking is available as well as a golf cart that a farm member can escort an individual with.

PARKING:

The parking area is to the left of the driveway and is one-way. Please note entrance and exit signs upon arrival. Two accessibility spots are located closer to the barn. To access them, make a right once in the driveway and drive up in front of the barn. Look for blue signs on the right.

COVID PROTOCOL:

Masks are not currently required at this location but are welcomed. Testing prior to attending is encouraged. If you don’t feel fully healthy, we ask you to stay at home.

A lo largo de esta jornada, exploraremos el mundo vivo del suelo y el micelio para aprender a integrar el sustrato usado para cultivar hongos en sistemas de compostaje casero y/o de pequeña escala. Usar sustrato de hongos es una manera increíble de incrementar la bioactividad de su composta para crear un suelo más rico y con nutrientes más accesibles para las plantas. Our plants are grown in Vermont Compost potting soil with tender care.

Some varieties (like lettuce and kale) are sold in packs of 6, others (like tomatoes and squash) are sold individually in 3” pots.

PARKING: Please park head-in on the right side of the driveway. We have a limited number of parking spaces, so you may need to park on the road. Please park on the farm side of the road only to allow for other cars to get through.

ACCESSIBILITY: All plants are situated on tables on a flat dirt driveway. Parking on grass has some uneven surfaces. Two accessibility spots are available close to the plant sale area. Parking on the road is gravel and very uneven.

ALSO OF NOTE: Please leave your pets at home! There are too many vulnerable plants and garden spaces in and around the plant sale area. Thank you for understanding.

Please Note: Pre-order lettuce, kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash will be accepted through May 25th. If you’d like to guarantee that you’ll receive any of these varieties, feel free to place your order now. At pickup, you can shop the rest of our selection! A minimum order of 10 items ($60.00) is required for pre-order.

We welcome Tu Le back to Woven Roots Farm to host two back-to-back workshops! On Saturday, November 12th, Tu will offer both an amaryllis-potting workshop, and a wreath-making workshop. Participants of both workshops (The Holiday Huddle) with receive Tu’s Vietnamese lunch at no additional cost. Lunch is available for purchase with each of the individual workshops.

The youngest of twelve, born in Phu Quoc, Vietnam, Tu is a first generation American farmer, floral designer, chef, storyteller, artist, activist and land steward. The co-owner of 328North, a small 1/2 acre farm, he has been farming on land he shares with his partner, Matt Bertles. Using the farm as his current medium, Tu connects with his Vietnamese Culture and shares his experiences with his community from seed to chopstick.

Amaryllis Potting will begin at 10:30. Participants will choose a vessel (ceramic, glass, wood or metal) and an amaryllis bulb (4-6 color options). Potting, decorating, and care instructions will be covered. Cost of workshop includes materials (starting at $48.00).

Lunch will be offered at 12:30, followed by Wreath Making at 1:30 where participants will learn how to create a wreath entirely from foraged materials. Tu will provide grapevine to make the rings, evergreen branches and more! Cost of workshop includes materials (starting at $48.00).

Come learn how Woven Roots Farm’s no-till practices are integral to their commitment to co-creating a more resilient community.

Throughout the day we will:

• Learn how Woven Roots Farm no-till, hand scale, composting, mulching, and harvesting practices are informed by their agricultural values.

• Learn several methods to assess soil health onsite with simple and inexpensive tools.

• Learn how Woven Roots Farm’s community and educational efforts are complemented and supported by their ecological practices.

• Learn the essentials of bed prep in a no-till, permanent bed system for both direct seeded crops, transplants and successive crop production.

• Discuss ways in which these management practices can nurture the soil and prevent and alleviate issues including soil compaction.

• View soil life under the microscope with Monique Bosch of CT NOFA

• Enjoy lunch on the farm and mingle with other farmers, gardeners, and community members.

BIPOC Beekeeper Training Program 2022

Woven Roots Farm is proud to be the host site for Smoke and Honey Co. Beekeeping Training Program. In this 5-month program, we seek to:

• Create a safe and inclusive learning environment

• Support the growth of a network of beekeepers of color

• Pass on the knowledge of 4 generations of beekeeping practices

• Train beekeepers of all levels

• Implement and learn about a series of holistic and sustainable beekeeping practices

• Nourish community through gatherings, bonfires, and potlucks

Registration costs are on a sliding scale, recommended $250/person, and include you’re own beekeeping gear - a hat, hive tool, smoker, and veil. Thanks to Berkshire Ag Ventures for offering a grant to bring registration costs down from $450/person to $250/person. No one turned away for lack of funds, all eager bees are welcome.

Join us as Woven Roots Farm participates in the virtual kick-off of Berkshire International Film Festival’s popular Environmental Film Focus Series with an inspirational film screening.

Following the screening, there will be a lively expert panel discussion led by Lillian Lennox, which includes the film’s director Sanjay Rawal; Danielle Hill, founder of Heron-Hill LLC; and Jen Salinetti, co-founder, farmer, and Director of Education & Community Engagement at Woven Roots Farm & Education Center.

The film is an intimate portrait of a growing movement among Indigenous Americans to reclaim their spiritual and cultural identities through obtaining sovereignty over their ancestral food systems, while battling against the historical trauma brought on by centuries of genocide.

GATHER follows Nephi Craig, a chef from the White Mountain Apache Nation (Arizona), opening an Indigenous café as a nutritional recovery clinic; Elsie Dubray, a young scientist from the Cheyenne River Sioux Nation (South Dakota), conducting landmark studies on bison; and the Ancestral Guard, a group of environmental activists from the Yurok Nation (Northern California), trying to save the Klamath River.

Join us for a presentation by Jen Salinetti, Co-founder, Farmer, and the Director of Education & Community Engagement at Woven Roots Farm. Jen will be speaking about the intricate nature of soil and how our relationship with the land affects the way we connect and relate to one another.

Beginning on February 26th, the student-led Sustainability Coalition of the Southern Berkshire Regional School District will present a complimentary virtual speaker series featuring six influential leaders in various sustainability fields to inspire action and raise awareness to build a better future for this generation and generations to come. Topics for the Sustainable Speaker Series -- Our Relationship to Land and Water: Conversations with Local and National Sustainability Leaders -- will include innovative solutions to the harmful effects of declining water quality, the importance of community food systems and the interconnectivity of soil. 

Supported by the Berkshire Environmental Endowment Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, the speaker series will present a range of experts to offer actionable methods for audience members to effect change in their households and communities.

This collaborative program explores the reciprocal ways we nourish and are nourished by both land and community. Bringing together a range of creative practitioners working at the intersections of artistic practice, land stewardship, education, food studies, and activism, this program touches on topics including food justice, ritual, consumption, care, and the ways sustenance builds connections to places and the beings that inhabit them. Participants include farmer Jen Salinetti, herbalist Mandana Boushee, and artists Yoko Inoue and Sarah Rara.

New Ecologies: Gatherings Around the Art and Ideas of Our Time is a series of virtual programs that bring together artists, thinkers, and practitioners working across disciplines in conversations that explore the interdisciplinary connections between art, community, humanity, and environment. The idea for the program stems from both an understanding of ecology as the scientific study of organisms’ relationships to one another and to their physical surroundings, as well as a consideration of the root of the word eco, which comes from the Greek oikos, meaning home. These gatherings prompt consideration about the role of art, creativity, and making—in all forms—in the understanding of our place within communities and the natural world.

This event will take place virtually over Zoom. Registration is required for this free event.

For many farmers, the work is never done. Even in these quieter ‘off-season’ months for those of us in the Northeast region, the ‘to-do’ list is long. When work always calls, it can be hard to carve out time to take care of ourselves and reconnect with the passion that led us to farming in the first place. In this virtual session, several farmers including Jen Salinetti of Woven Roots Farm, Derek Christianson of Brix Bounty Farm and Deb Habib of Seeds of Solidarity, will describe some practices they employ to maintain health and wellbeing for themselves and others on the farm, and how these manifest in their overall approach to farming.

Join farmers Jen Salinetti of Woven Roots Farm, Noah Kellerman from Alprilla Farm, and Doug Wolcik of Gaining Ground Farm at NOFA/Mass Virtual Winter Conference. This intensive will be centered around the experience of tillage reduction on small-to-medium scale farms. This is an opportunity to delve deeper on a peer-to-peer level with panel discussions and Q&A.

This intensive will be offered separately and in addition to the regular conference.
